According to the report "development trend of global commercialization of biotechnology/genetically modified crops in 2018" released by the international organization for the application of agricultural biotechnology services, the planting area of genetically modified crops has increased by about 113 times since 1996, reaching 2.5 billion hectares in total, making biotechnology the most rapidly applied crop technology in the world.

"Since the large-scale commercialization of gm crops began in 1996, the planting area of gm crops around the world has expanded rapidly, and the varieties and traits of gm crops have been continuously enriched." "In 2018, the average application rate of gm crops in the world's five major gm crop growing countries has been increasing and is close to saturation, including 93.3% in the United States, 93% in Brazil, nearly 100% in Argentina, 92.5% in Canada and 95% in India. In the future, the expansion of gm crop acreage in these countries will be achieved through the ready approval and commercialization of new gm crops that will address climate change and emerging pests and diseases." Paul teng said.

The report of the international organization for the application of agri-biotechnology service highlighted that gm soybean has the highest application rate in the world, accounting for 50% of the global area of gm crops. The planting area of gm crops with multiple traits continued to increase, accounting for 42% of the global planting area of gm crops. Farmers in 10 Latin American countries planted 79.4 million hectares of gm crops; Nine countries in Asia and the Pacific grew 19.13 million hectares of gm crops; In Asia, Indonesia developed drought-tolerant sugar cane for the first time through public-private partnerships. The kingdom of swadini (formerly Swaziland), along with South Africa and Sudan, grew gm crops in Africa and introduced insect-resistant cotton flowers. Approval of insect-resistant cotton flowers in Nigeria, Ethiopia, Kenya and Malawi marked the beginning of gm crops in Africa.

In addition, in Europe, Spain and Portugal continue to grow genetically modified corn to control the European corn borer; A larger area of gm crops was planted according to the needs of farmers and consumers, including content-resistant, brown-resistant, low-acrylamide and late-blight resistant potato, brown-resistant apple, insect-resistant eggplant and low-lignin alfalfa. New crops and trait combinations between fields include insect-resistant and drought-tolerant sugarcane, high-oleic acid rapeseed and safflower seeds. Golden rice, Bt rice, herbicide-tolerant cotton, low phenols cotton, etc., have obtained multiple food, feed and processing approval. Crops approved for 2019 include a new generation of herbicide tolerant cotton and soybeans, low phenols cotton, glyphosate-resistant and low lignin alfalfa, omega-3 rape and insect-resistant cowpea.

"Gm crops with multiple traits will increase in the future. For example, in many countries in Latin America it is very clear that more and more farmers are willing to grow gm crops with multiple traits." Paul teng said.

Globally, genetically modified crops have added $186.1 billion to agricultural revenues over the past two decades.

According to the report, 70 countries or regions around the world have approved the use, application and cultivation of gm crops. Since 1992, these 70 countries or regions have approved 4,349 regulatory approvals involving 27 gm crops. Of these, 2,603 were approved for gm use, 1,461 for suitability, and 825 for plantability, teng told reporters. The United States had the most approvals, with 544; Maize is the most approved crop, with 137 approved in 35 countries or regions.

According to teng, new traits have been developed in sugar cane in 2018. Brazil grows 400 hectares of insect-resistant sugar cane; Indonesia opened drought-tolerant sugarcane cultivation in 2018, which is significant in combating global climate change.

Australia has also carried out 8 hectares of research, development, promotion and cultivation of safflower with high oleic acid. In addition to the increase in planting of genetically modified food crops, more genetically modified food will be approved in 2018.
